Summary
The Hågaån catchment area primarily consists of agricultural, forestry, and some urban lands, facing significant eutrophication issues in its lakes and waterways. Uppsala municipality, as partners in the LIFE IP Rich Waters project, established a water council with various stakeholders such as landowners and horse farms. By creating a local action plan to guide efforts, they have implemented various measures, such as water management plans on a farm level, wetlands, and phosphorus ponds, funded through local grants and municipal co-financing. A communication project addressing horse-related eutrophication impacts involved neighboring municipalities and horse farms.
Prior to forming Hågaån’s water board, discussions with landowners and horse farms occurred. Collaboration will continue post-Rich Waters, with future initiatives managed by the water board and the municipality. Ongoing support will include assistance for private initiatives, seeking funding, and managing necessary permits. Additional water management plans on a farm level may also be considered.
