Summary

The objective of the construction of fauna passages in rivers Rällsälven and Hedströmmen was to enable trout and other species to migrate to reproduction areas, and to connect sub-populations of target species with each other. In doing so, also stimulate the survival and growth of the river pearl mussel and its genetical distribution between sub-populations. The aim was to provide fauna passages that also could constitute habitat for rare species, since key habitats like rapids and streams are highly exploited, while crucial for maintaining populations of river pearl mussels and trout.

The project has achieved its main objectives as robust examples of how to adapt Swedish hydropower to local environmental needs. Target species have responded as expected to the actions. Future evaluations will provide answers to how suitable the artificial creeks are as habitat for target species.

The general public, authorities and the hydropower industry have shown great interest in the project and the experiences from it. The project has received large media interest and contributed to raising public awareness.
